Asbestos was widely used in the UK construction industry throughout the 20th century, until health concerns led to its use being banned. However, any building constructed before 2000 could contain asbestos. Today, asbestos is still the biggest cause of work related deaths in the UK.
The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012
The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 introduced the duty to manage asbestos (Regulation 4) for those responsible for the management non-domestic premises. The Regulations also introduced the role of dutyholders.
Are you:
· an employer?
· self-employed?
· an owner of premises?
· an occupier of premises?
· a managing agent?
If so, you and/or your organisation will probably have duties under Regulation 4. The extent of duties will depend on contractual, tenancy and other existing obligations or agreements.
